Local = Better

Today’s newest obsession with eating locally grown, organic foods has some people wondering if this is just a fad or if there really is a benefit to eating this way. At Pizzeria Seven Twelve, we’re here to advocate for the benefits of eating the locally grown foods that we serve.

Local Food Tastes Better

Taste is an excellent place to start. The reasons our food is so good is because it’s made with fresh ingredients. Fruits and vegetables are at their best right after they’ve been plucked off the vine. The less distance food has to travel, the better it tastes. It’s that simple.

Local Food is Better for You

When they’re picked off the vine, foods start losing vitamins and nutrients. The more time passes, the more depleted nutrients become. On big name farms, crops are sprayed with pesticides (also known as poison). Then, food is sprayed with chemical preservatives before it makes its way to the grocery story, where’s it’s covered in wax to make it look shiny and new. Local food doesn’t need to go through that whole process. We use ingredients that haven’t been sprayed or preserved. They taste great naturally.

Local Food is Better for the Environment

In some restaurants and grocery stores, the food was grown clear across the country, possibly even internationally. It had to travel hundreds of miles in a semi-truck, boat or plane. Imagine all the emissions we could reduce by just buying locally.

By now, you probably want to make sure all your produce is locally grown like ours. To get you started, here are some of the fruits and vegetables in season here in Utah: broccoli, carrots, squash, zucchini, corn, tomatoes, kale, beets, melons, peaches, pears, blackberries, apples and more. Find out what else is local in your area by visiting a farmers market.
